Prof. Meng Xiuxiang’s research group from the School of Ecology and Environment went to the Three-River-Source National Park to hold training on enhancing ecological and environmental management capabilities and conducted a biodiversity survey

From March 15th to 21st, 2024, commissioned by the Three-River-Source National Park (Northern foothills of the Tanggula Mountains), Prof. MENG Xiuxiang and members of the Sustainable Ecology Research Group, including WU Jiayi, LU Xiaoping, and AN Zhengxu, in collaboration with Prof. ZHU Yinjiu, SANGZHU Zhaxi, and ZHA xi from the School of Ecology and Environment at Tibet University, organized a training program on “Improvement of Management and Protection Capability of the National Parks and Nature Reserves” for the cadres and staffs of the National Park and Nature Reserves. Following the training, a biodiversity survey was conducted in the Three-River-Source area. The training covered a wide range of topics, including endangered wildlife population management, habitat management and conservation, construction of ecological corridors and wildlife passage, laws and regulations on ecological environmental protection, effectiveness of nature reserve management, grassland and wetland conservation, sustainable development, and the application of traditional knowledge in ecological management. It was conducted through lectures, round-table discussions, and practical exercises, facilitating interactive learning between the training team and participants. The interactive teaching and learning between the training team and participants achieved excellent training results, garnering praise from both the commissioning organization and the participants.

After the training, the group, in collaboration with partner organizations, conducted a biodiversity resource survey in the Tangbei region of the Three-River-Source area. Building upon field ecological surveys conducted in July and November 2023, the group extended its efforts by conducting biodiversity sample line and strip surveys. Additionally, nearly 400 infrared cameras were deployed to monitor and assess the distribution and population status of endangered flora and fauna in the region, as well as population dynamics, habitat alterations, ecological assets, energy utilization, and community involvement in biodiversity conservation.

The Sustainable Ecology Group, led by Professor MENG Xiuxiang, has long been engaged in the research and practice of ecological environment and resource conservation and management in China’s western region, and has been conducting in-depth research on the biodiversity of the Tibetan Plateau since 2019, of which the research in the Three-River-Source National Park will continue until 2025
