School of Ecology & Environment at Renmin University of China
The School of Ecology & Environment at Renmin University of China (RUC) was established in April 2024, formerly known as the School of Environment & Natural Resources founded in November 2001. The establishment of the School of Ecology & Environment is in alignment with RUC's commitment to implementing significant directives outlined by General Secretary XI Jinping during his visits and research inspections. It also signifies RUC's dedication to advancing strategic reforms within the environmental sciences. Building upon the foundation of the former School of Environment & Natural Resources, the School of Ecology & Environment has evolved into a comprehensive institution for ecological and environmental education and research, covering the fields of Ecological and Environmental Economics, Sustainable Development Management, and Ecology. It serves as a crucial hub for nurturing talents in environmental economics in China, and emphasizing interdisciplinary integration, reflecting RUC's advantage in social sciences.
Over the past two decades of development, the School of Ecology and Environment has now formed a distinctive interdisciplinary discipline cluster in ecology and environmental sciences, integrating economics, management, and ecology, with the distinctive characteristics of RUC. The School has two Doctoral programs in Population, Resources and Environmental Economics and Sustainable Development Management; three Master's programs in Population, Resources and Environmental Economics, Sustainable Development Management, and Ecology; and one undergraduate program in Resource and Environmental Economics, along with postdoctoral research stations in Theoretical Economics and Public Administration. Additionally, the school also offers the Mingde Environment 'Economics-Science,' Elite Talent Experimental Class, as well as the 'Resource and Environmental Economics-Public Management' Dual-Degree Experimental Class.Among them, Population, Resources and Environmental Economics is a secondary discipline under the double first-class A+ discipline of Theoretical Economics. It is the earliest established, largest in scale, and most comprehensive in training levels in the field of Resource and Environmental Economics in China, which has been included in the first batch of key disciplines for the 'Double First-Class' initiative nationwide and possesses both national and Beijing municipal levels first-class undergraduate program construction sites in 'Resource and Environmental Economics.
The School takes XI Jinping's ecological civilization ideology as its fundamental guideline for running the school and conducting academic research. With the aim of serving the national ecological civilization strategy, the school focuses on the overall and leading issues of ecological civilization, actively promote the interdisciplinary integration, constructs an autonomous knowledge system of ecological civilization, and continuously advances the theoretical interpretation and practical research of the holistic ecological perspective. The School aspires to be a outstanding institution in ecology and environmental science, contributing to the construction of a beautiful China and facilitating harmonious coexistence between humans and nature in modernization. The college is committed to fostering a Renmin University-style approach to the development of ecological and environmental disciplines.
The School is currently equipped with a distinguished faculty consisting of 15 professors, 15 associate professors, 12 lecturers, and 1 postdoctoral fellows. It also features domestically and globally recognized senior scholars such as ZHANG Xiangshu, LU Mingzhong, MA Zhong, ZOU Ji and WANG Hua, who have made foundational and pioneering contributions to the disciplinary development, academic prosperity and talent cultivation in the field of Resource and Environmental Economics in China. A significant number of young and middle-aged faculty members have made remarkable achievements and have contributed and will continue to contribute to the disciplinary construction, talent cultivation, and academic research of the School in the new era. The School remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing composite talents with both local and international perspectives, solid professional knowledge, and an innovative spirit, to serve the modernization of national ecological civilization construction and environmental governance.
